Oyo government commend Etisalat for commitment to sport development

OYO State Government on Tuesday in Ibadan paid a glowing tribute to one of the foremost telecommunications companies in Nigeria- Etisalat for its contribution towards building reliable youths for a better society and a brighter future through football, describing the company as lovers of children and character developer.

Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, gave the commendation during the courtesy visit and trophy tour of the management of Etisalat Nigeria.

Underscoring her contributions, the commissioner said, "I really want to appreciate Etisalat Nigeria for their brilliant Corporate Social Responsibility activities in Nigeria as one of their host communities which focused in three main areas; Education, Health and Environment and thus has helped the company to have recorded measurable successes over 25 States and 600 Communities across the country through the following activities: Adopt a School Initiative, Teacher Training Programme, Fight Malaria Initiative, Ebola Virus disease containment/awareness initiative, community School Support programme and the creation of Eco-friendly Biodegradable Sim Cards".

He stressed that the company's efforts and determination to develop the minds and bodies of Nigeria youths, especially the school children through sports by coming up with the Etisalat U-15 School Cup Football Competition across the nation will help the school children to overcome the environmental challenges that can lead them to crime and other societal vices, adding that the contributions of Etisalat will remain indelible in the school's pages of history.

While buttressing the aim of Etisalat U-15 School Cup Football Competition, Professor Olowofela said, "today, football game has become a career and when marries with Education the sky is the limit, because education and sports compliments each other".

" Moreover, football can be referred to as king of sports because its significant role in the field of sports cannot be over emphasized because it has brought unity to Nations, even to the whole world", he continued.

Noting that education is critical, the Commissioner also urged Etisalat Nigeria not to focus on sports alone, but to respond to the clarion call of the state government on Public Private Partnership by contributing to facilities development of public schools with a view to promoting qualitative education delivery.
The meeting, had in attendance the permanent secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Aderonke Makanjuola.
